In this Op-ed, Mr. Lewis stated: "Over one-quarter of all land in Iran is covered by two harsh deserts. But the ancient Persians were among the first to find a solution to overcome the challenge of bringing water to where people wanted to live. Theirs was a unique and environmentally-friendly system for transferring groundwater to settlements all across the desert. What they invented was the Qanat."
