International Mother Earth Day
22 April marks International Mother Earth Day. It is a day to reflect on human’s relationship with the planet that supports them. The air, the water and the soil are part of a delicate global ecosystem that is increasingly under pressure from human activities.
The theme for Earth Day 2014 is Green Cities which aims to help cities and communities around the world to accelerate their transition to a more sustainable future.
Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. As the urban population grows and the effects of climate change worsen, our cities have to evolve.
The UNDP has a number of ongoing Environment and Sustainable Development Projects with the Government of the Islamic of Republic of Iran which aims to reach the goal of this campaign.
In commemoration of the Earth Day, Donyaye-Eghtesad newspaper published the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Gary Lewis’ speech which was delivered at the Royal Geographical Society entitled “Challenges to and from the Environment in Iran.”
