Message from the UN Resident Coordinator on the sad passing away of Mr. Nelson Mandela – a living legend

Dec 6, 2013

NELSON Mandela, who led South Africa out of apartheid and became the nation's first black president, has PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 95

I once served the UN in South Africa. And I had the privilege of being in Mr. Mandela's presence. What inspired me most was not so much the man himself, but the effect he had on everyone else in the room. We all seemed to be thinking: “If, after all that has happened to him, he can show such compassion, such inclusiveness, such grace, if only we could be more like him.”  Truly the world has lost an icon.

Thank you–Sir–for personifying those timeless United Nations values: peace, human rights, justice, development… In Larger Freedom.
